If you’re the type of person who shops for organic produce or buys natural cleaning products, you might be interested in an organic pillow like the Birch Organic pillow . Birch is a brand that’s all about creating natural and eco-friendly sleep products and in this review, I’ll be taking a close look at their Organic pillow to help you decide if it’s the best pillow for you.

Short on time? Skip to the end for my review summary.

The Birch Organic pillow is a GREENGUARD Gold certified product that is a great for back and side sleepers.

No pillow is one size fits all, so let’s go over my recommendations for the Birch Organic pillow .

I personally tested the Birch Organic pillow to get a sense of its feel and who it would be best suited for. However, feel is subjective, so you may have a different experience than I did.

At Sleepopolis, we categorize pillows’ firmness as either soft, medium, or firm. Each firmness is best for a different sleeping position to maintain spinal alignment: soft for stomach sleepers , medium for back sleepers , and firm for side sleepers .

I found the Birch Organic to have a medium firmness. Your head and neck do sink into it a bit, but the buoyant latex fill provides some elevation. Additionally, because the filling is shredded, you can mold the pillow around you to create the most comfortable shape for you.

Like firmness, each sleeping position generally sleeps best on a different loft, or height, of pillow. I recommend a high loft for side sleepers , a medium loft for back sleepers , and a low loft for stomach sleepers .

The Birch Organic pillow has a medium loft, although it does compress a decent amount when you lie on it.

Now let’s go over my experience with this pillow in different sleeping positions .

Side — I found the Birch Organic pillow to be comfortable for side sleeping. While it’s not a super firm or lofty pillow, I found it kept my neck elevated enough to stay in line with my spine while lying on my side. I also liked that I could fluff and mold the pillow to get more or less fill directly under me.

Back — I thought the Birch Organic was a great pillow for back sleeping. The medium loft and medium firmness are just right for back sleeping. The shredded latex offers a nice mix of support and pressure relief for lying on your back. Since you can sink in and mold the fill, your neck won’t end up craning upwards, but is still supported.

Stomach — I didn’t think the Birch Organic was great for stomach sleeping. I didn’t think it was soft enough or had a low enough loft to prevent my neck from craning while I was laying on my stomach. For better options, check out our best pillows for stomach sleepers .

Under the Arm — I think the Birch Organic is a good pillow for sleeping with under the arm. It’s very huggable, because the shredded fill allows you to fluff and mold it.

Between the Legs — The Birch Organic pillow could work well for sleeping with between the legs. The shredded fill allows your legs to experience some pressure relief , and it molds around your legs so that your hips won’t be pushed out of alignment.

Cover: The Birch Organic ’s cover is made from 100 percent organic cotton. The cotton is Global Organic Textile Standard ( GOTS ) certified to be organic. This cotton cover is soft and breathable. It also has a zipper, which allows you to remove it.

Fill: The fill of this pillow is shredded natural Talalay latex sourced from Southeast Asia. This latex is eco-INSTITUT certified to be a low-pollution and low-emission product. According to Birch , the latex fill is also hypoallergenic , mite -resistant, and antimicrobial.

The latex is wrapped in organic Birch wool, which is sourced from New Zealand . This wool is only sourced from farms that comply with the PGG Wrightson Wool Integrity program, which ensures ethically grown wool. The wool in this pillow also acts as a natural fire retardant , as wool fibers turn to carbon when exposed to an open flame.

The Birch Organic pillow has several other certifications for its materials, including the GREENGUARD Gold certification , Fair Trade certification , and Forest Stewardship Council certification . Additionally, the Birch Organic pillow is manufactured in the USA .

This pillow is available in either a standard or king size . I tested the standard size for this Birch pillow review .

I think the Birch Organic pillow is a great pick for hot sleepers. The organic cotton cover is breathable, allowing air to circulate out of the pillow. The shredded fill also promotes breathability , on top of the fact that latex maintains a naturally cool temperature. Plus, the wool wrapped around the latex fill provides moisture-wicking and temperature regulating effects.

Altogether, that makes for a great cooling pillow. But if you want to see more options, take a look at our best cooling pillow roundup .

Overall, I think the Birch Organic pillow is a high-quality , cozy pillow for side and back sleepers made with organic materials. The shredded latex provides a springy feel, but still offers pressure relief . The moldability of the fill allows you to shape the pillow exactly how you want it. Plus, the materials used in this pillow work well to keep you sleeping cool.

However, this pillow is not particularly comfortable for stomach sleeping, as it isn’t soft enough nor does it have a low enough loft. It’s also not a great pick for people who prioritize easy cleaning, as the pillow is spot-clean only and cannot be machine washed or dried.

Birch ships to all 50 states for free. You can expect the pillow to ship within three to five business days. The company also ships to Canada for an additional fee.

Birch offers a 100-night sleep trial with this pillow, meaning you can test it out at home for 100 nights. If you decide the pillow isn’t the right fit for you, you can return it within that trial period for a full refund.

Yes, Birch offers a 1-year warranty on this pillow.

No, the Birch Organic pillow is not machine washable. It can only be spot cleaned with mild detergent. Allow the pillow to fully air dry before use.

Now let’s compare the Birch Organic pillow to one of its competitors: the Avocado Green pillow.

Made with all-natural latex, the Avocado pillow is both eco-conscious and supportive!
